Bio Oko: Cinema with Retro Vibes
If you are a fan of local art cinemas, Cinema Bio Oko should be on your radar. Cinema is located in the popular Letná district and features both contemporary and art movies. What I like is a creative program with festivals that you won’t find anywhere else. If you want to explore Prague like a local, this is a must place to discover.
Program of Bio Oko
This intimate art cinema has something for everybody. Mornings are devoted to children and seniors and evenings features a wide range of contemporary and independent movies, various festivals and documentaries.
Several times per month, you can even buy tickets for live performances of opera, ballet and classical music broadcasting from all around the world. Bio Oko even organizes special programs with discussions. I like their special program called “blind nights” when you will be surprised by the choice of the movie. Check what is on the program right now. Tickets are for a very affordable price 130 CZK that is about 5 EUR.
Design and Interior of Bio Oko
What makes Bio Oko special is also an original retro design. This functionalist building was constructed in 1940 as a part of a block of flats and is covered by tiles that were typical for this period. Reconstruction in 2007 preserved the original style and introduced bar just after the entrance, so you can even come only for drink and chit chat with your friends.
Cinema Bio Oko is particularly unique with its informal atmosphere of the screening hall. Besides the typical cinema style chairs, you can choose from a wide variety of seating, such as bean bags, beach chairs, retro armchairs or even a dentist chair. If you prefer even more informal seating or lying, take your seat on the floor with cushions in your favorite position. To have a full hedonist experience, treat yourself with homemade snacks and drinks, that you can order on the bar.
How to get to Bio Oko:
Bio Oko is located in a cool resident district called Letná. A few steps from cinema is a huge park Stromovka, café Dos Mundos with swings, independent theatre Alfréd ve dvoře and national gallery with an exhibition of modern art. Further on the hill is a Letná Park with a great view of the city center across the river. No wonders that this district is very popular for locals but is still hidden from the touristic trails. If you want to discover Prague like a local, this district and is a cultural center around Bio Oko is a great place to start.
Take tram number 1, 2, 8, 12, 25 or 26 and jump out at the Kamenická tram stop.
