Miss Sophie´s: Authentic Stay in the Hearth of Olomouc

When I entered Miss Sophie´s Olomouc for the first time, I immediately felt the spirit of history. The lobby itself is also Sophie´s Café, where you can enjoy local sweets, small dishes, and drinks. I especially admired the modern interior with original features and beautiful details. And I wanted to know more…

The history of building dates back to the 8th century (apparently one of few houses that survived Swedish invasion – you can read the article Olomouc: Guide for Beginners). For most of the time, the house was a place of crafts and manufactures. The revival of the building started with the new owner, Bohemian Hostels & Hotels (BoHo), which started reconstruction that took about ten years. The most important aim was to preserve the historical features and turn them into a modern and comfortable place for travelers. After the final opening in 2017, their careful work was even awarded as the historical sight of the year 2017 in the Olomouc region.

The hotel also has one distinctive feature confirming the careful renovation, and it’s NO elevator. No worries. If you have heavy luggage, there is a special pully elevator that will do the job.

Rooms with Spirit

We had a reservation for two nights in a double room with a view of the main street. You can choose from double or triple rooms or even one family suite for up to five people. If you want to experience something different, you can even sleep in the attic with a view of the sky just above your bed.

Our room was pretty spacious with a huge king size bed with canopy, vintage furnishing, small kitchen, and a private bathroom. The bathroom itself is a small oasis. I especially admired the tiles, original pieces that were found during the renovation. Every bathroom has a different pattern, and we got these in yellow-red colors. Every room has its small kettle so that you can prepare your tea or coffee anytime you need it. What I appreciated were small treats such as water, fruits, and sweets that make you feel more like at home.

Sophie´s Café

In the basement of the hotel is a charming Sophie´s Café where you can have your breakfast and have a coffee all day long. What is special about this place is courtyard hidden at the very back of the café. There are so many interesting places to sit down, such as swings, hammock, loungers, and typical garden chairs. This café with garden is open both to the hotel’s guests and local people, so there is always a vibrant atmosphere.

I like the story that this charming courtyard used to be a meeting place in the 1980s and 1990s when lady, working in the local theatre, used to invite friends and debated new plays and contemporary art. Apparently, this place has a much longer tradition of meeting people.

The menu is pretty diverse and mostly based on local products. Coffee is roasted in La Bohéme; you can taste local beer Chomout or local smelly cheese Olomoucké tvarůžky. You can always choose from a variety of homemade cakes and freshly made lemonades.

Start your day with a breakfast where you can choose from a range of cereals, seeds, home-made jams, cheese, fruit, vegetable or freshly baked bread and pastry. If you prefer hot breakfast, you can order variation of egg omelets or sweet waffles. I am a big fan of banana with chocolate, so the choice was clear for me. You can enjoy this breakfast even if you are not a hotel guest. It is served between 7-11am. Just to be on the safe side, make a reservation, it’s a popular place.

Our stay in Miss Sophie´s Olomouc perfectly fitted with our exploration of the Olomouc city center. Both the hotel and the city have a visible history, modern features, and fresh vibes.
