Edison Filmhub: Boutique Cinema and Café

Edison Filmhub is a newly open art cinema right in the city center. Thanks to its location and philosophy, Edison perfectly fits for English speakers as well as a demanding audience. What I found unique about this place is the design and story behind this place. Are you interested to learn more?

The Story Behind the Edison Filmhub:

Edison opened recently, only in June 2019, in a former Electric Prague Company that used to light up Prague in the late 1920s. You might have a question of why the name Edison. Actually, Thomas Alva Edison was invited here for the opening, but he apologized that he couldn’t come. There is still the original letter from Edison apologizing that he is ill. So, here is the mystery behind the name.

During the communist period, the building changed to a hotel for communist dignitaries. With the fall of the regime, the building deteriorated over time. In 2006, it was nicely reconstructed for the bank institution and closed again in 2012. The current owners really like the place, its history, and its industrial look and asked for permission to open a Filmhub here. Fortunately, they got approval so that we can enjoy this place with its new cultural purpose.

Program of the Edison FilmHub:

Edison is also special for its unique choice of the movies that differ from other art cinema, such as Světozor, Bio Oko, or Kino Aero. Edison is screening its own selection of movies, mostly focusing on European production, but also covering the best of the world cinema.

You can explore movies within the festivals such as Be2can (the best movies from Berlin, Venice, and Cannes festivals), Scandi (new movies from Scandinavian countries), Crème de la Crème (the best choice of French cinematography), and Film is Great (the diversity of British movies).

Besides the festivals, you can also check the regular Edison program. I would also recommend Movie Barf Monday (happening every Monday, obviously) screening the award-winning movies, especially for the English-speaking audience. Another tip is the Edison Matinee screening the festival classics every day at 2 pm for a perfect price of 75 CZK (3 EUR) together with a 25% discount on café and cake. That is an excellent option for a break during the day! As a bonus, you might encounter special lectures and debates with moviemakers. So, check the Edison program and choose whatever you like.

The Edison Filmhub Café:

Edison is coming with a design café in an industrial style that is respecting the original look of the building. I especially like the huge windows bringing the light to space and hanging plants over the heads of people. I am looking forward to coming here in the summer and enjoy the outdoor benches as well.

How to get to the Edison Filmhub:

The venue is really exceptional. You can find Edison by the iconic Jindřišská Tower, just between the Synagogue and the gothic church. You can have a walk from Mustek metro station or take a tram to Jindřišská. Nearby, you can also find the Museum of Senses or the Mucha Museum, other tips for your exploration of this quarter.
